Sustainable Living Festival

Our man in the White River region, Erik Howland, will be manning a stall at the popular Pick n Pay Sustainable Living Festival from the 28th - 30th September.

The Festival is held at the GKNP College, Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate.

The festival aims to develop a sense of responsibility for our natural environment and social systems. Nestled between two of South Africa’s most renowned Natural Heritage sites, the Kruger National Park and the Blyde Canyon, the Hoedspruit region is home to a number of communities who realize that they have a more than usual responsibility towards their environment.

This responsibility led to the creation of the Kruger to Canyons (K2C) Biosphere Region (ratified by UNESCO in 2001).

Sannitree is proud to be a part of this, and our products are ideally suited to the vision of sustainable living.

Oxfam Tests Sannitee Bio-Enzymes

“The conclusion is that Sannitree Bio-Enzyme can indeed double the life span of a pit latrine by reducing sludge, and has a large impact on reducing flies and odours” --Oxfam Test Report

Oxfam is an international confederation of 17 organizations networked together in 92 countries as part of a global movement for change. They are famous for assisting in war torn areas and setting up refugee camps around the world, creating a future free from the injustice of poverty.

Oxfam chose to test Sannitree Bio-Enzyme Granules in the pit-latrines of two IDP camps in Kenema, situated in Sierra Leone, West Africa.

Their aim was to see if treating pit latrines with Bio-Enzyme Granules would extend the life of the toilets. As a control measure they left certain toilets untreated.
The results of their experiments proved that latrines treated with Bio-Enzyme Granules had a life span of 4 months before they filled up. This is double that of the untreated latrines, which filled up in 2 months.

In addition, according to the report, “Sannitree had a great impact on flies and odour nuisance. With one month Sannitree application, odour and flies considerably decreased.”

Clogged up Septic Tank in Pretoria

One newly satisfied Sannitree customer is Mooiplasie, a self catering establishment in the game reserve of Dinokeng, just north of  Pretoria (www.mooiplasie.co.za).

The facility is popular amongst families, school and church groups as well as companies for midweek and weekend conferences. Small weddings are also catered for.
All in all, Mooiplasie caters for just over 72 people on a septic tank system, and before they started using Sannitree, they were having overflow problems.

These problems were probably caused by the increased load of people using the system on the weekends.
This is a common occurrence with resorts and even holiday homes: extra people use the septic system and the natural bacteria cannot keep up with the sudden increase in organic waste. The excess waste is not broken down fast enough and a build up occurs, causing the sewage lines to back up, block and overflow.
“Initially we were quite skeptical about the Sannitree Free Flo Pills but having administered them according to the instructions, we were amazed that within two months the overflow problem on our main septic tank disappeared completely as well as the unwanted smell and accompanying flies,” said Leon, of Mooiplasie.
“Our general soak away pit area has shown a vast improvement which can only be attributed to the use of Sannitree Free Flow Pills. This product can only be recommended.”
Leon is one of many satisfied Sannitree Customers who have seen our products work for them.

Sannitree for Shrimp Farms in Ecuador

One of Sannitree’s fastest growing lines is a product called Aqua-X, which is used as a biological water cleaner for aqua-culture farms.

Aqua-X is designed to break down dead algae, fish excretes and excess feeds in culture ponds, creating a cleaner environment for shrimp, prawn and fish.

It will also out-compete the growth of undesirable luminescent vibrio bacteria within the pond bottom soil.

Aqua-X has proven especially effective in shrimp farms in Ecuador, which is located along Pacific Coastline on the northwest portion of South America, and once the largest exporter of shrimp to USA.
Says Ecuadorian shrimp expert, Jorge Jalil, “Aqua X has proven to be exceptionally effective, and farmers are extremely satisfied with the results. In a competitive market long dominated by big players, it is refreshing to see innovative new products finding their place”.
Due to the infamous White Spot Syndrome Virus, Ecuadorian shrimp exports have declined from their highest peak in 1998 (114 000 tons) to just over 46 000 tons today.

As bio-technology products improve, so too does the production of shrimp, and Sannitree is at the forefront of developing new solutions to combat aqua-culture disease.

South Africa’s Oldest Hotel Chooses Sannitree

HOUW HOEK INN is a gracious old hotel dating back to 1779 and situated in the Kogelberg Reserve, 90km from Cape Town. (www.houwhoekinn.co.za)
All in all they have 50 rooms, sleeping a total of 120 guests per night, plus wedding facilities for up to 220 guests plus conferencing for 120 guests.

What is significant is that the hotel is in a sensitive biosphere and right off the sewage grid. This means that it needs to have all its effluent waste treated before disposal.

To reach the stringent levels set out by the Department of Water Affairs, Houw Hoek Inn approached Sannitree to provide a turnkey waste disposal system that ticked every box on the Departments check list.
Sannitree have installed a Package Plant (systems vary, but can treat up to 20 cubes of waste water per day) which ‘cleans’ water suitable for irrigation purposes.

In addition, they use Sannitree Bio-Enzyme Granules to treat their septic tanks (which lead into the Package Plant) and Oxygentor in the plant itself.

Redeployable Camp Systems SA (www.rcssa.com)

RCS is pace setting redeployable camp system, offering a turnkey camp operation which can be erected at speed and designed for army bases, refugee camps and even medical facilities.

Their system includes design, operation and maintenance of the camps as per customer specs.
RCS turned to Sannitree for help with their ablution facilities, as most of these camps are set up in areas without direct water supply, and as important, limited means of disposing of effluent safely.

In response, Sannitree recommended their Free Flowing Waterfree Urinal Valve. Besides eliminating the water-in problem, it solved the waste-out problem too, as the amount of effluent waste to be disposed of was massively reduced.

Sannitree has had a long and successful relationship with organisations involved with refugee camps, and has supplied Bio-Enzymes to Oxfam for breaking up effluent waste in pit toilet systems at various camps throughout Africa (see www.sannitree.co.za/bio-enzymes_granules.htm).

Toilets On Top Of the World

Table Mountain National Park is one of Cape Town’s busiest tourist attractions, receiving on average 15 000 visitors per day.

This equates to a lot of toilet waste for an area without a sewage system!

What this means is that all their sewage is transported daily, first class, via the famous cable way car so it can be safely disposed of.

But Sannitree have alleviated part of this problem by installing Free Flo Urinal Valves, which eliminates the need for water or flushing.

The overall effect is a huge reduction in sewage waste, a cash saving, and a lowering of the environmental footprint of the visitors, because you don’t need water to transport water.

Plus it cut out odour problems. Ever seen a urinal packed with ice? That’s because they are probably water borne urinals and inclined to block, causing smell problems.

Free Flo Urinal Valves create a dry surface environment, which does not allow bacteria to breed and spread bad odours.

SCIENCE CENTRE ON BOARD

The Cape Town Science Centre is a wildly popular interactive science centre aimed at the youth market with up to 138 000 visitors per year.

With their move to Observatory, a new addition to the facility is an outdoor area, where visitors can learn how they are harvesting rain to save water. . .  or simply to enjoy a game of Giant Chess!
It is fitting that the Science Centre takes it water saving seriously as they have now installed Free Flo Urinal Valves to all the men’s urinals, as the cash saving is considerable when you factor in that around half of the visitors are male, and on average the saving is 3-5 litres per flush.
